The business of art & computers

I awoke last Monday morning to find my computer had crashed!   I had been thinking the night before that I had better back up my all my current "Art Business" files.  Luckily, I had backed up all my files from 2009 and I had "hard copies" of my 2010 filed.  Still, I lost all my email contacts, my new card designs (I had just made the week before...several hours of work) and probably the most disappointing was the hours of new photo images that I had taken recently.  These were still life set ups with the last of the flowers in my yard, and peaches, plums, apples that I had received from friends. (Yes, I am now backing up my art business files!  I will do so weekly...)

I received a timely email from my brother Glen with what I believe to be a perfect explanation of why my "hard drive" crashed.

Click on to this link and see for yourself!    It is worth a chuckle!
This is what I think happens on your computer if you leave it on overnight.

On The Easel-New Floral Painting with Peonies by Laura Leeder

"When I am at the easel it is a dream-like state where small problems are presented one after the other and as they are solved the mind moves on to new problems."   Tom McCann

After a major disappointment on Monday....(hard drive crash).....I am finally back on line.  Still recovering from the disappointment of losing all my data.  I had started saving files to disk, however, hadn't  yet saved any of my photo files from the last few months.  *This one hurt, as I had taken several hours of "set ups" for future paintings, and of course, deleted from my camera as I was copying to my computer.  Nothing like learning the "hard way"!   The good news....the sun came out for a while yesterday and I was able to bask in it's warmth and forgot my loss for a short time.  I also took the opportunity to photograph the progress of this painting.  Have added more color to the petals and started to deepen the shadows and color on the vase.  Still need to sketch in some peony petals on the table top, before I add color.  I have sketched in a floral pattern on the vase, but, unlike the actual vase, which is full of bright colors, I will keep this pattern in neutral tones.  Don't want to compete with the peonys!

I will put this painting aside for a while as I need to complete several smaller paintings that are currently in various stages of completion for upcoming "Christmas Shows".   I will post these paintings later.....

Yours in art,
Laura Leeder

On The Easel-New Floral Painting, Peony's in a Porcelain Vase

"The simplicity of form, the drama of rich, intense colour, the joy of challenge, and the challenge of endurance... The piece, when it is over, is not what is made, but how it is made."   -Andrew Kuntz

As promised, I am finally posting an image of the latest painting I am working on.  The size of this piece is 21.5" x 16.5".  I chose to keep the composition simple as it's all about the peony blossoms!  I wanted the focus on the multi-petaled blossoms and the patterned vase.  I tried to choose colors for the background that were overall cool and would help push the "pink" blossoms forward.  These are complicated flowers and will be a real challenge for me!  The trick will be in soft pale glazes of color, using a variety of both warm & cool tints to slowly develop the blossoms.  I am moving slowly on this one......
It's overcast today, so I plan to spend a good part of the day in the studio painting.  However, before I do, I'm off to the video store to pick out a movie for tonight.
Have a good one, Laura Leeder
