"Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful."  ~Norman Vincent Peale

"Christmas - that magic blanket that wraps itself about us, that something so intangible that it is like a fragrance.  It may weave a spell of nostalgia.  Christmas may be a day of feasting, or of prayer, but always it will be a day of remembrance - a day in which we think of everything we have ever loved."

A Few Images From The November Art Show and Sale

"The one big gift each artist gives to the world is his or her uniqueness. We are all existentially alone, yet we try to reach out to others through our art, our writing or our music."   Brian Knowles

I had hoped to showcase a panel of each of the participating artists work, sadly, my photo taking skills were less than satisfactory and I was only able to rescue the few photos I have posted here.

It was an enjoyable weekend, thank's to everyone who came out to see the show!  Many people commented on the wonderful variety of work on display and I have to agree.  Each artists work was unique and distinct.

A very special "thank you" to the Images Art Group for inviting me to participate.

My watercolour painting Pear Lace (gifts from the gods) is finished!

"A man watches his pear-tree day after day, impatient for the ripening of the fruit. Let him attempt to force the process, and he may spoil both fruit and tree. But let him patiently wait, and the ripe pear at length falls into his lap!"   ~ Abraham Lincoln

Pear Lace, November 11, 2012, Watercolour, 10x12.25"
By Laura Leeder

There is something about pears that make them irresistible to use in paintings.  If you can get them right off the tree with their leaves intact, even better!  I was able to drive out to our friends farm and do just that.  Of course, I picked several for our immediate eating pleasure and several more to share with Shannon (their treasured horse) as she wasn't prepared to let me leave until she'd had a few as well!

Did you know there are over 3000 varieties of pears grown around the world?  They have been cultivated and enjoyed for thousands of years.  Homer referred to them as a "gift from the gods" in the Odyssey.  For this painting I chose to place these "gifts from the gods" onto one of my cherished, vintage lace table runners.

This painting will be available for sale at the Images Art Show and Sale, November 24th and 25th, here in Creston, BC.

Thanks for stopping by, comments are always appreciated.

Hydrangea Blossoms-The Choice Of An Emperor and Me!

"What I dream of is an art of balance, of purity and serenity devoid of troubling or depressing subject matter."  ~Henri Matisse

©Serenity, Watercolour, November 11, 2012
   Laura Leeder

Big, Bold and Beautiful!  A few cut blossoms placed in a bowl and displayed in your home, create an immediate impact.  In the meaning of flowers, hydrangeas generally stand for friendship, devotion, perseverance and understanding.

"According to a Japanese legend, a proud emperor used a bouquet of hydrangeas as an apology to the family of a girl with whom he was in love. Ever after, the flowers have served as a representation of heartfelt feelings, whether of joy or sadness."

These blue-violet blossoms fill me with a sense of calm and peace, hence the name "Serenity" for this watercolour painting.

This painting will be available for sale at the Images Art Show and Sale, November 24th and 25th, here in Creston, BC.

Have a great week!

Artfully Yours,
Laura Leeder

The Peony Challenge....There is Light at the End of the Tunnel!

It's been a challenging few weeks, dealing with the loss of a family member. I finally made it back into my studio yesterday and after "warming up" on a small geranium blossom painting (for another post), I set to work on this peony blossom once again.

While it's nearing completion, there is still so much left to do.....I really want to have this painting included in the IMAGES Art Show & Sale, November 24th & 25th at the Rotacrest Hall here in Creston, BC.

So my #1 goal this week is to work on this painting every day this week, until I get it completed!   Wish me luck...have a super Sunday,

P.S. If you are in the area this Saturday, Nov.10th plan to stop in at the Rotacrest Hall for a pre-Christmas Sale featuring a variety of vendors, myself included! More information about this on Wednesday's post!

You'll then want to stop by KingFisher Books to see local artist James McDowell's latest paintings on display.

Cherry Lace - Watercolour Painting By Laura Leeder

"Let us learn to appreciate there will be times when the trees will be bare, and look forward to the time when we may pick the fruit."
  ~Anton Chekhov

Who could resist tasting these richly hued, plump and juicy looking Lapin Cherries?

A painter of course!  Actually, I allowed myself to enjoy one, maybe two, okay, three cherries at the very most before I set to the task of finding the perfect plate and lace cloth to photograph them with.

This painting is of part of my new series of paintings that will be available for purchase this November at the local Images Group Art Show and Sale here in Creston, BC.    (See Sidebar)

An Art Exhibit Of Still Life Painter Elizabeth Robbins

"Each one of us has a fire in our heart for something. It's our goal in life to find it and to keep it lit."  Mary Lou Retton

Last Friday, I received an invitation from friend and professional artist Jenny Steenkamp to join her on a trip to Cour d' Alene, Idaho to attend an art show of her long time friend Elizabeth Robbins.

For those of you who are not familiar with Elizabeth, she is an award-winning, American still life painter and art instructor.  Her paintings can be found in galleries throughout the United States.  She has been featured in several art magazines including American Art Collector and Southwest Art. She has traveled extensively and teaches across the United States and Canada.

©Pansies In Sugar Bowl by Elizabeth Robbins

I've admired Elizabeth's work on-line for some time, but there is no comparison to viewing her paintings in person!  The exhibit runs until November 9th and I would highly recommend a visit to "The Coeur d'Alene Galleries" to see her latest works for yourself.

After viewing her show, Elizabeth was kind enough to accompany Jenny and myself on a visit to two other galleries where she shared bit's of her art knowledge and experience while we wandered from room to room admiring the paintings before us.

Before leaving Elizabeth's company, we had the pleasure of meeting her partner, John DeMott, who is an accomplished western art painter.  Both artist's were generous of their time and knowledge and I happily  listened and like a wet watercolour brush, soaked up what color I could.

Jenny and I capped off our visit to Couer d'Alene with a stop at the local antiques/vintage shop.  We spent an enjoyable time sifting through an assortment of old china, copper and pewter items, porcelain and glass vases, linens and more; looking for the perfect gems to use in our next still life paintings.  As you can imagine, we found more than a few and some tough decisions had to be made.

A very enjoyable day, I came away feeling inspired and energized.
Thank You all!

The Peony Challenge....Next Step

"The sun rose brilliantly above, reflecting the hues of red, orange, lavender and blue in the pond before me. The viridian shadows changed to lemon yellow and lime green as the light washed the morning and I tried in vain to save a piece of this miracle on canvas."   ~Mary Erickson

©Peony Blossom-Watercolour Painting In Progress
   Artist Laura Leeder

I managed to get a few minutes each day in the studio last week so the progress on this peony has been slow.  I've added several glazes of color to the blossoms slowly creating depth with the value changes.  I am using various mixes of pyrrol orange, rhodonite genuine, quinacridone pink, and ultramarine blue with  aureoline and new gamboge yellow.  Yesterday, I sketched in a few suggested leaves on the bottom and I've started working on the center.  As I study the progress so far, I can see some problem areas that need consideration.  I will try to resolve a few of these next.....

Wishing you a wonderful autumn Monday, mine promises to be sunny, perfect for a walk in the country.

Welcome Autumn! Maple Leaf painting by Laura Leeder

"Every leaf speaks bliss to me, fluttering from the autumn tree."
  ~Emily Bronte

©Maple Leaf, Original Watercolour Painting By Laura Leeder
   Image Size:  6"x7.25"

With October just around the corner, I thought I would celebrate the changing of the seasons and welcome autumn indoors with this maple leaf painting. Tomorrow, it's headed out the door for a visit to Emmy, my framer, in preparation of an upcoming Art Show and Sale this November here in Creston.

The show is held each fall by a professional group of local artists known as the "Images Group".  This year the group has invited me to participate as a guest artist.   So, I have been working on several new paintings for this show and right now I still have 7 paintings on the go, all in various stages of completion.  So it's off to the studio for me.....

Wishing you a warm and relaxing autumn week,

The Peony Challenge-Work In Progress, Artist Laura Leeder

"Allow one color, or just a couple of analogous colors, to dominate the mood of the painting; and let the others fulfill a supporting role."  ~Zoltan Szabo

©Peony Blossom - Watercolour Painting In Progress
   Artist Laura Leeder

Spurred on by your words of encouragement and my own desire to complete this challenge, I've continued to develop the flower and background.  As the painting progresses, I will probably add some abstract leaf patterns, for now, I will focus on the flower.

Up to this point I have used mostly yellows on the peony petals with only a hint of pinks and blues.  I think I am close to establishing the depth or value range of yellow that I'm looking for, so, its time to start adding in some glazes of red and blue hues to help define the petals.  *This next step is where I start getting anxious as I am really out of my comfort zone.

Still....I've come this far, can't stop now...

This is where a color charts come in handy.
Here is an example of my Yellow Chart:

I have created five of these color charts.
-They are on my best watercolour paper!
*this is 300lb Arches Cold Pressed
-The size is 11'x7.5" and each square is 1"
*This size allows for a quick visual of my colors
and is small enough to transport.

Each time I try a new color I add it to the appropriate
color chart.

(I also have larger color charts with  2" squares)

©Yellow Color Chart, Laura Leeder (front)

This is the back side of my color chart.
I start with pure color from the tube and drag it
across the paper to give me an idea of the full
value range of each hue.

By studying these charts before I start adding paint to paper, I can plan my color choices and the order that I glaze them onto the paper.

I play/experiment with my colors often. The more that we know and understand our colors and how they react with each other, the better our chances of success with each painting.  When those mistakes occur (and they will) we will have a better chance of knowing how to turn them into happy accidents!
If you've not taken the time to play/experiment with your colors in this way, I encourage you to try it.  You won't be disappointed!

The Peony Challenge....

"I am often helplessly confronted by the picture... filled with suspense. What I have drawn suddenly seems to have developed its own dynamic - one that is not always necessarily kind to me. It is a genuine struggle and challenge."
~ Simone Bingemer

©Peony~Watercolour Painting In Progress, Sept.2012

Who doesn't love peony blossoms?  They are one of my favorite spring flowers.  This one is from my tree peony that I planted 2 years ago.  It finally produced a few small blossoms in late June of this year.

It has a wonderful, rich burgundy center that is stunning against the yellow of the petals.  As it matures, it's going to make a wonderful focal point in my flower bed.  I photographed these complicated blossoms thinking that at some point this year I would try painting them.  As my first and only peony painting sold last week, I thought I would attempt this one now.

After simplifying the number of blossoms in my sketch and transferring it to my watercolour paper, I proceeded to drop in my first washes of paint and now I am now wondering....WHAT THE HECK WAS I THINKING???   After almost a month away from my studio and painting, could I not have chosen a simpler flower to paint?  Not to mention an easier color to attempt a likeness of?

It seems I just can't help myself....I am compelled to try....wish me luck, and have a super Sunday!

Taking tea with Lori of Tigz Designs

"Come and share a pot of tea, my home is warm and my friendship's free"

©Tigz Design Tea, photo by Laura Leeder, June 2012

There is something very special about sitting down to tea. And last week I had the pleasure of sitting down to tea with Lori Cameron of Tigz Design.  We were enjoying a "Cream Earl Grey" tea from Lori and Bill's newest line of products, "Tigz TEA HUT Experience", a line of premium loose leaf teas from around the world.  Cream Earl Grey is a delicious and aromatic tea with a distinct creamy flavor.  The cornflower petals add a delicate floral scent, making it a truly delightful experience.
We shared some ideas and talked about our passion for what we do. We were later joined by Lori's husband Bill the other half of Tigz Designs.  I had a peak at the new "tasting room" or "tea hut" soon to be filled with a variety of teas and specialty items guaranteed to elevate your tea experience.  Lori is excitedly awaiting a new line of teapots and cups to arrive, (I'm still thinking about Lori's personal set that we had our tea in.....a beautiful pattern, rich colors and unique shape....hmm, I see a another painting taking shape).

Lori and Bill started Tigz Designs in 2006 as a greeting card business and in 2010 added a line of Gift Baskets. Their newest venture Tigz TEA HUT Experience is sure to be a hit as well!  To learn more about their product lines or to place an order, visit their website:  or phone:  250-428-9450

Now I think it's time for a cup of tea....
Have an enjoyable day,
