Blue Orchid with Teacup Painting

"Theories, methods and formulas aid in the making of art, but each artist's technique comes more from his or her personality more than anything else."
    ~ Randall Sexton

I'm grounded back on earth again and I"m back in the studio!  Several more layers of color have been glazed onto this painting.  The orchids are starting to take shape.  Still a ways to go on the teacup, I am debating how to finish the inside of the cup.  Initially I was asked to paint a small orchid on the inside edge.  I think this will be too much and take away from the blossoms on the edge of the cup.  Perhaps some tea inside?  Any thoughts?

Back to the studio, have a great day!

Blue Orchid Teacup Painting- Progress: Slow and Steady.

"Put a strong dark in early, near your center of interest, to serve as a value scale, nothing can be darker."  ~Tom Lynch

I've managed to carve out a few minutes over the last two day's to work on this painting.  I'm slowly glazing on light values of color, building depth and form.  This technique will help to achieve a soft, translucent glow in the teacup.  My approach to this painting was to start with the orchid blossoms and establish some of my darkest dark's almost immediately.  I am now, moving around the painting glazing light washes of color to establish the shapes of the teacup, flower and shadow.  Colors used so far:  Aureolin Yellow, Quinacridone Gold, Rose Madder Genuine, Quinacridone Violet, Manganese Blue Hue and Ultramarine Blue, all by Daniel Smith.

Tomorrow, I am posting a "surprise" so please check back!
Have a great day,

Blue Orchid Tea, Painting In Progress

"The simplicity of form, the drama of rich, intense colour, the joy of challenge, and the challenge of endurance... The piece, when it is over, is not what is made, but how it is made."   ~Andrew Kuntz

Spring is always a busy time of year.....with company at the beginning of the week and the yard and flower beds in urgent need of spring clean up, it was a real challenge getting into the studio and getting this painting started.  I will continue to focus on this painting throughout the week, dividing my time between the studio and working outside in the yard, plus cleaning and setting up the deck.

Wishing you a Happy Sunday,

Easter Eggs or Apples? Watercolor By Laura Leeder

"Thought is the blossom; language the bud; action the fruit behind it"

I thought about painting Easter egg's.....I decided on this golden apple instead!

This small apple painting is almost complete.  I just need to study it for a day or two. I think it definitely needs deeper color in the shadow areas and maybe a bit of fine tuning elsewhere.

I am also working on the sketch for a red apple painting to compliment this one.  As well, I have been working on the sketch for my orchid and teacup commission.  It's ready to be transferred to watercolour paper and I will start the painting next week.  (I can't put it off any longer as the orchid I am using is down to 3 blossoms!)  I have photographs to work from, however, I still want to study the real blossoms as they are small and very complicated.

Next week, I will share information about an upcoming project that I am working on and very excited about.  (It's for a very good cause)

Wishing you a Happy Easter weekend,
