This Week I'm Thinking Pink....Pink Roses That Is.....

"As you grow older, it dawns on you that you are yourself – that your job is not to force yourself into a style but to do what you want."  ~Beth van Hoesen

Queen Elizabeth Rose, Watercolour, April 2014
By Laura Leeder

Lately my creative juices have been taking me in a slightly more playful direction........

I'm using simplified floral compositions, ink, and glitter paints in both acrylic and watercolour.  I've been exploring new techniques and color mixes, spritzing and splattering and losing all track of time!   It started with tulips and I couldn't help thinking how fun it would be to try a rose.....

I was only going to spend a few minutes on this pink rose as a warm up exercise before working on my chintz teapot painting.  But then I got lost in the process and each time I set this rose down to work on my chintz teapot painting, I picked it up again.   I just couldn't help myself!

Step 1: The rose design.  I started by drawing out the rose and then adding the lines. I simplified the shapes and tried to imagine cutting these shapes out of glass.

Step 2: The ugly stage.  Really? Is this what I'm doing when I'm supposed to be working on my chintz painting?  Using a technique taught to me by artist Win Dinn, I am trying to imitate stained glass.

Step 3:  Adding colour to the leaves, outlining the shapes and trying not to think about the "other" painting.
Adding ink to my paintings is an idea that I have been thinking about for some time.  Artist Eileen Gidman's lovely fabric paintings using reactive dyes and her watercolours with ink have been my inspiration.

Step 4: The final layer. Using glitter paints I brush another layer of colour onto the petals and leaves.  These paints dry slightly opaque and the mica in them sparkles in the light.  The overall effect is subtle but pretty, though, it does not show up in this photograph.

The final painting:

Well that's just delicious, Laura, and thanks for the shout out. You've done a stellar job on it all, and that background takes the rose into another dimension. I'm delighted to see you 'playing' with those techniques, too!

To get lost in painting, now that is an artist's reward.
